Master Software Protection and Licensing with CodeMeter Technology
Effective software monetization requires more than issuing license keys. Software vendors need to protect valuable application code against reverse engineering and tampering, define suitable licensing models, deliver licenses securely, and ensure that the protected application can reliably verify the customer’s entitlement.
This tutorial provides an introduction to the complete CodeMeter workflow, from protecting an application to creating and delivering the license required to run it. It shows how the different components of CodeMeter work together as one integrated system for software protection, licensing, and entitlement management.
The process begins with CodeMeter Protection Suite, which encrypts the application and adds automatic license checks. Firm Code and Product Code identify the software vendor and the licensed product, connecting the protected application with the corresponding license.
The tutorial then follows the workflow into the back office, where licenses are created and prepared for delivery. Depending on the required deployment scenario, the resulting entitlement can be stored in a hardware-based CmDongle, a software-based CmActLicense, or a cloud-based CmCloudContainer.
When the protected application is launched, CodeMeter verifies whether the required license is available. Only an authorized user with the matching entitlement can access the protected functionality.
By following the complete process, you will gain a practical understanding of how CodeMeter combines application protection, flexible licensing, secure license storage, and back-office operations. This integrated approach helps software vendors safeguard their intellectual property while supporting commercial models ranging from perpetual and subscription licenses to trials and feature-based offerings.
