Lost Licenses – Smart Strategies for Recovery and Control
In the fifth and final part of our series on CodeMeter License Central, we turn our attention to support processes. To stay with our analogy from the previous webinars: What happens when the suitcase goes missing? As in real life, there are several possibilities — the suitcase reappears, or it sank with the ship and is lost forever on the seabed. And if it does resurface, it may be so damaged, along with its contents, that it is no longer usable.
Trust or Control?
When a suitcase goes missing on the way to a vacation, it causes stress and inconvenience for both sides — the traveler and the transport company. A lost license is no different. The software user is suddenly unable to access the application and wants a quick replacement. The vendor, on the other hand, cannot simply hand out a new license too easily, since the original might still exist and remain usable.
This is why CodeMeter License Central offers several options for handling lost CmContainers and their licenses if they resurface. It also includes mechanisms that require licenses to check in regularly, ensuring transparency and control.
Manual or Automatic Processes
One option that both reduces costs and boosts customer satisfaction is automation. Users can report the loss of a license via CodeMeter WebDepot or CodeMeter License Portal and instantly receive a replacement. The number of these “self-healing” processes can be configured by the software vendor.
Alternatively, the release of a replacement license can be tied to manual approval. This approach is often used when the software is of very high value and sold in smaller volumes. A hybrid model is also possible: combining automated and manual processes, or stepping in manually whenever the limits of automation are reached.
Container Types
The processes can be designed uniformly across all CmContainer types, but they can also account for the specifics of each type. For example:
- A CmCloudContainer cannot be physically lost; at most, the user may lose their login credentials.
- A CmActLicense can be accidentally destroyed on a computer, in which case special rules can be defined for recovery on the same machine.
All of these options can be tailored and configured individually in CodeMeter License Central and CodeMeter License Portal.
