The Industrie 4.0 framework is finding more and more applications every day, proving that technological progress is indeed the driving force of the new millennium. To keep its promise, digitalization needs to be global, innovative, and fair for everyone to be able to reap the benefits of the digital transformation. One of the threats to its successful and wide-spread implementation is the cyberwar we are already observing: an increasing wave of cyberattacks on digital know-how is reported on a daily basis. More than ever before, it becomes crucial to not just amp up the knowledge base in any enterprise, but also to level up technologies and policies in order to protect products, software, and data from all forms of physical and logical counterfeiting.

Oliver Winzenried, CEO and founder of Wibu-Systems, and also head of the board of the Product and Know-how Protection “Protect-ing” working group of VDMA, the German Engineering Federation, and member of the board of directors of the Medical Technology working group of VDMA, will elaborate on Protection of ventilators from hackers and product pirates, 10.10-10.40 am. He will make his point clearer by illustrating how to successfully apply cybersecurity in practice. Wibu-Systems has recently worked with Fritz Stephan to embed its core security technology, CodeMeter, into their emergency ventilator units. In doing so, it has achieved multiple goals: protecting the IP of this company, regarded as one of the world leaders in the development of specialized technical solutions in ventilation, anesthesiology, and oxygen supply; protecting the integrity of the software running on their devices; ensuring the secure mobile identification of all units in the network; protecting the data of patients’ records; and, additionally, enabling new business models. This last aspect goes beyond the enforcement of security by design; by leveraging software licensing, hardware manufacturers can actually make a leap into the digital economy and multiply their revenue streams while catering to their customers’ needs.
